Desi Arnaz
Cuban-born musician and actor Desi Arnaz is best remembered for his hit song ''Babalu'' and for his role as Ricky Ricardo in the television series I Love Lucy. He was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba's second largest city, to a wealthy family. His ancestors had been among the recipients of the original Spanish land grants in the eighteenth century, and his father served in the Cuban House of Representatives and became the youngest mayor that Santiago had ever had. He and his family fled Cuba during a revolution in 1933 and settled in Miami. While in Miami, Desi worked a myriad of odd jobs such as cleaning bird cages in order to help support his family. He was a talented musician, and made his professional debut as a guitarist for the Siboney Septet in 1936. Arnaz accepted an offer to work for Xavier Cugat in New York despite a significant pay cut from playing with the Siboney Septet.
