The Florentine Tolerance Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Florentine Tolerance During the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, prostitution was a major concern of the Florentine government. Prostitutes could be found nearly everywhere along the streets of Florence, and the Florentine government knew that these street walkers must be controlled and regulated. The Office of Decency was created in 1403 in order to address the problem of prostitution, through legislation and management. While prostitution was a somewhat socially acceptable practice during this period, sodomy was strictly prohibited and could be punishable by death. In this respect, the Florentine government’s Office of Decency as well as Office of the Night was much more tolerant of prostitution than sodomy, and were thus fairly lenient on prostitution in comparison to the harsh regulations placed on sodomy between Florentine males. Prostitutes in Florence were usually women of the lower class who were not financially stable.
