Breakfast of Champions, by Kurt Vonnegut, was published in the year 1973. This was the year in which the United States withdrew from Vietnam and the Senate began its investigation of the Watergate scandal that was to result in the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon. Many people were beginning to doubt the reasoning behind the war, and most importantly, they were also beginning to doubt our government. In the preface and first chapter of the book, Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut draws a picture of an asshole, or a symbol that represents one. He does this because talking about an asshole is vulgar, improper, and offensive. After drawing this symbol, Vonnegut takes stabs at the lyrics to the national anthem, the flag, the Masonic symbol on the back of the dollar bill, the importance of the year 1492, and the Statue of Libertys torch, indirectly relating the vulgar drawing of the asshole to what he sees as the vulgarity of some symbols of the United States.
