Sonnet 128 Commentary
In Sonnet 128, the speaker arises in jealousy of the instrumental objects being played by a mistress accompanied by her tender and gentle manner, causing the speaker to fantasize her sensual presence. Shakespeare utilizes personification, imagery, and two dominating tones to enhance his sonnet.
Sonnet 128 commences with the speaker listening to the gentle music. How oft when thou, my music, music playst, upon that blessed wood whose motion sounds. Personification was used in the second line; Shakespeare is giving wood sounding motion. These two lines reveal one of the themes in this Sonnet which is music. The following three lines are, With thy sweet fingers when thou gently swayst. The wiry concord that mine ear confounds, Do I envy those jacks that nimble leap. These lines are the start of jealousy from the speaker; he envies the instrument that is being gently swayed, and the jacks or pegs that nimble leap. Imagery was used abundantly in these lines.
