The main problem with racial preference is that it is merely another form of racism towards minorities. Three hundred years ago America showed racism by owning and abusing slaves. Today America shows racism through the labeling of people by their racial groups. Ironically, this is actually an attempt to destroy racism. Though the intentions may be good, advocates of racial preferences have done nothing more than to change the shape of racism into something seemingly benevolent and helpful. By giving certain minorities special handouts, colleges act as if those minorities are intellectually inferior to non-minorities and not capable of meeting the standards of society through their own efforts (Carter, Affirmative Action 48). Instead of destroying racism, this furthers racism by re-introducing the idea that minorities are inferior.
Racial preferences also send a harmful message to the minorities who supposedly benefit from them. They are made to think that it does not matter if they dont meet the highest standard of excellence. They will be excused, and even rewarded, bec......
