Comparison of two cultures in "The Lottery” and “No Name Woman” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Shirley Jackson in her work, “The Lottery” and Maxine Hong Kingston in her work, “No Name Woman” both demonstrate the impact of culture. This essay will show the power of culture through violence with cruelty, the role of woman, and sacrificial death. First we see both ways of the cultures accept violence with cruelty. Shirley Jackson in her story, “The Lottery” focuses on Tessie Hutchinson, a woman who is stoned to death by members of her villages. While the stoning is a cruel and brutal act, Jackson enhances its emotional impact by setting a story that seems civilized and peaceful society. This suggest that horrifying acts of violence can just take place anywhere at anytime, and they can be committed by the most ordinary people. The violence is such an accepted behavior than even their own families would join in.
