What makes a man, and what makes a monster? In her classic Gothic novel Mary Shelley blurs the line which would distinguish one form from the other. This ill-fated tale takes us into the world of the character Victor Frankenstein, and follows his obsession with making new life. From this obsession stems the violent creature which is only deemed as the monster. It is in these two characters we find the perfect literary examples of two visionary outsiders.
The sense of otherness is one that is spread throughout the novel; a sense which at points most of main characters deeply experience. In looking closer one can find a multitude of parallels between the character of Victor and that of his creation. The man and the monster, in the end, might not be as different as it would seem.
