The clock reaches ten, the parties are beginning, and the drinks are quickly being consumed. 46% of male and 33% of female drinkers consume alcohol on a weekly basis (Drug information, 2006). What these 79% of weekly drinkers do not consider before consumption are the negative effects they are bringing onto their bodies. Alcohol is a depressant. The more a person drinks, the more it lowers their cognitive functions, physical functions, and mood (Hester, 1998). Alcohol affects the body psychologically, physically, and internally. Because alcohol is the most powerful drug available, it can depress the central nervous system (CNS) functions when large doses are taken. Alcohol acts as a sedative on the CNS. It depresses the nerve cells in the brain, which can alter or even damage their ability to respond. Chronic use of alcohol puts people at risk for a variety of mood disorders including depression and anxiety. It can also cause memory loss and poor judgment (Promoting awareness, 2006).
