Similarities Between Gilgamesh & Genesis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Mesopotamian legend, The Epic of Gilgamesh and the stories in Genesis in the bible carry so many similarities. In both stories [the] God(s) became upset with the people on Earth and decided to send a flood (Genesis ch6:5v11). There then was a man (Noah & Ut-Napishtim) chosen to build an ark and fill it with a sample of different animals and a few humans, these selected would then be spared from that was being sent (Genesis ch6v8, v14-22, ch7). Even many of the dimensions of the ark were similar between stories, for instance: they both had many compartments, one door and at least one window (Genesis ch6). The period following the floods from these stories are also very similar, in that the ark landed on a mountain in the Middle East, and a couple birds were sent out to attempt to discover dry land for the survivors (Genesis ch8v6-12).
