There are many phenomena like groupthink, social facilitation, social loafing and diversity that can change an individuals behavior in the social environment. Depending on what is influenced, it can produce either a negative or positive response. Behavior can adjust according to the social situation at any point in time to facilitate whats going on in your surroundings. It can also change in regards to group size and whether the setting is in a professional, community or personal environment. This paper will examine the social influences of groupthink, social facilitation, social loafing, and diversity.
Groupthink
Social influences can be a powerful factor on how decisions are made, sometimes in a negative way. Groupthink is a phenomenon that occurs when groups of people make bad decisions together. The three fundamental aspects of groupthink are: (a) the process of polarization, (b) the cohesiveness of the members of the group, and (c) the size of the group (Lahey 2003).
