Who knows what keeps us living and struggling, while all things break about us?”1 These questions derive from Alan Paton’s great work-“Cry, the Beloved Country” and the answer to which, perplexing thousands of philosophers for centuries, is revealed in this novel. To explore and understand this answer better, I’d like to list some background information of this book first. The story unfolds with Stephen Kumalo, who has set off to Johannesburg-a city in South Africa in quest of his sister Gertrude and his son Absalom after receiving a letter from Msimangu, a fellow priest in Johannesburg. However, the closer Kumalo has got to finding them, the more fear he has acquired, not only of the dangerous situation of Gertrude and Absalom but also of the future of South Africa. The cruel fact, that Gertrude has degenerated into a prostitute and Absalom will be hanged because of killing Arthur Jarvis, who is the son of James Jarvis, overwhelms Kumalo, for his big......
