Using humor, sarcastic cynicism and social theory, Langston Hughes, Barbara Ehrenreich, and Roger Putnam all discuss the topic of religion in their books. Their reasons for doing so vary from a need to reveal the truth behind the supposedly mystical religious experience, to expressing their personal view of how people use religion as a self-serving device, to showing how religion can be used as a tool to increase social capital and ultimately improve the quality of one’s health and happiness. In his book, The Big Sea, Langston Hughes describes numerous encounters he has had with the church and religion. It is apparent from the start that Hughes is very disenchanted with the religious experience. His opening sentences in his section on salvation read, “I was saved from sin when I was going on thirteen. But not really saved” (Hughes 18). In the way that an adult, wise to the ways of the world, looks back upon his childhood beliefs though his grown-up eyes, Langston Hughes recalls the final evening of the big church revival with light-hearted humor and saddening disappointment.
