Ernst Lubistschs 1940 The Shop Around the Corner is a romantic comedy that became a blueprint for the films under the same genre yet to come. This movie portrays the story of two middle class pen pal lovers that have not realized that they have already met. Ironically enough, these two characters work together at Matuschek & Co., a small leather goods retail store in Hungary, and treat each other very badly. The story contains a special tender touch; yet at the same time, it displays hatred, jealousy, distrust, and adultery among other negative elements. Nevertheless, the story doesnt lose focus on its original goal and maintains that special charm throughout the whole film.
Like all films, The Shop begins with the introduction of a few characters Pepi, Pirovitch, and Alfred Kralik among others. As the characters enter the picture, the Christmas season atmosphere is depicted. Kralik introduces one of the letters he has received from his Dear Friend as he reads a small portion of it to his co-worker Pirovitch.
