“Reverend Parris” In 1692, the Salem Witch Trails caused much confusion and anarchy. A total of nineteen people were executed for doing witchcraft and thirty-nine innocent people were hanged as witches. In The Crucible, specific characters contribute to the rising hysteria of witchcraft. Reverend Paris changes throughout the play. Reverend Samuel Parris is a unique person who changed drastically throughout the course of the play. In Act I, Reverend Parris is the first and most reprehensible of the characters in the play. He is a man who symbolizes the particular quality of moral repression and paranoia that characterizes the Salem Witch Trials. He is also a wealthy man. “I pray you feel the weight of truth upon you, for now my ministry’s at stake, my ministry and perhaps your cousin’s life. Whatever abomination you have done, give me all of it now, for I dare not to be taken unaware when I go before them down there (page 916).” This means that Parris only cares about himself, likes to know things, but doesn’t have faith in anything.
