In 1692, the Salem Witch Trails caused much confusion and anarchy. A total of nineteen people were executed for doing witchcraft and thirty-nine innocent people were hanged as witches. In The Crucible, specific characters contribute to the rising hysteria of witchcraft. Reverend Paris changes throughout the play. Reverend Samuel Parris is a unique person who changed drastically throughout the course of the play.
In Act I, Reverend Parris is the first and most reprehensible of the characters in the play. He is a man who symbolizes the particular quality of moral repression and paranoia that characterizes the Salem Witch Trials. He is also a wealthy man.
