Interpretations of texts are formed by every responder depending on their social context, ideology and experience. “Othello” is a play of international renown and consequently has been interpreted in a number of different ways. Many critics, theatre directors and film producers have conveyed to their audiences an original reading of character and theme by emphasising a particular aspect of the play. Two opposing critics who have demonstrated this are F.R.Leavis and A.C. Bradley who, while appreciating the metaphorical language and imagery created by Shakespeare, have formed their own interpretation as to the nature of the tragedy and the significance of the main characters. Much of the play’s action and dialogue centres around the character of Iago who, according to Bradley, is responsible for the downfall of the “Noble Othello”. He is a man of malevolent thoughts who takes positive delight in animosity, and other’s sufferings.
