John Marshalls Contribution to Nationalism
John Marshall was chief justice of the United States for almost thirty-five years, from 1801 to 1835. Judge Marshall was an essential figure in the history of American law. A well-known Virginia lawyer and Federalist, John Marshall had served as secretary of state to John Adams and a diplomat to France when the XYZ affair took place. During his time as the Chief Justice, he contributed in numerous ways to the surging nationalism throughout the country. By the force of his personality and the wisdom of his decisions, Marshall raised the Court to a position of great power in the federal government. He succeeded in making it the ultimate authority in all constitutional matters.
Jefferson became president on March 4, 1801, and the new secretary of state was James Madison. When William Marbury asked Madison for his commissions, the secretary of state, acting under the orders from President Jefferson, refused to deliver the commissions. Marbury then turned to the Supreme Court, asking it to issue a writ of mandamus ordering Secretary of State ......
