The Catcher in the Rye - Phoniness Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Phoniness is often used in The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger as the main character, Holden, tries to figure out what is "phony" and what is not. The word "phony" is used many times by Holden. In fact, the book is full of his feelings about phoniness. He uses it to describe the fake and superficial attitudes that he encounters in the world around him. It seems to be a way for Holden to justify how the world is a bad place and to keep him from growing up and moving into adolescence. Phoniness seems to be a characteristic of mostly all adults around him. In the beginning of the book, he refers to the headmaster of his school as being "phony". He also regards people who act religious as being phony. To some degree he considers his brother, D.B. to be phony. Holden sees the phoniness in everyone around him but what he fail to see is the phoniness with in him self. Holden seem to find just about all adults as phony.
