The Atlantic Slave Trade
In order to fully explain and understand the concept of the Atlantic slave trade and why it was so significant in world history, we must first acknowledge its origins and examine how it began. When Columbus discovered the New World in 1492, he faced a conflict that would eventually shape the world. Portugal claimed that the new land had to be used to serve inferior people. Spain, which Columbus represented, and Portugal wanted a settlement, and since they were Catholics, they decided to seek advice from the Pope. After examining the situation, the Pope put together a series of papal bulls that established a line of separation between the territories. The East was to be used by Portugal and the West was to be used by Spain. However, the Portuguese didnt like this conclusion and later on came up with a new compromise in the form of the Treaty of Tordesillas. This treaty allowed Portugal to control Brazil.
