Contrast in Irony in Romeo and Juliet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Shakespeare’s, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is well known to everyone as a tragic love story. However, even the classification of this story is contrast, using the words ‘tragic’ and ‘love’ together to describe a story, because the two could not be more different. This, is an example of irony, one of the most captivating literary techniques. Irony can be broken up into three separate types; situational, verbal, and dramatic. All of them have different uses, and meanings in a play such as this, which, are all positioned together to create, what is, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Verbal irony is when someone says something he or she do not really mean, in a somewhat sarcastic manner. For instance, when Lady Capulet tells Juliet her plan to kill Romeo, Juliet replies by saying: Indeed, I never shall be satisfied With Romeo, till, I behold him – dead- Is my poor heart, so for a kinsman vex’d (III,v,94-96) What Juliet means in this statement is not that she wants Romeo dead, but until she can hold him, it is her heart that is dead.
