The Scarlet Letter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The elements that provide the framework of a story are composed not only of peripheral struggles, but internal struggles. The internal problems of a character can be emotional and self-inspired or influenced by outside sources like ones peers. One’s physical traits imitate ones emotional traits and their physical traits are affected in many ways. The internal struggles Dimmsdale encounters throughout the novel, The Scarlet Letter by: Nathaniel Hawthorne, are exposed through his corporeal means of expression and reflect his inner thoughts and sins. One of the internal problems that face Dimmsdale throughout the novel is his ongoing effort to confront his sins and associate them with the outside world. For instance, Dimmsdale confesses to the church that he is a vile wicked sinner when he says, “He had told his hearers that he was altogether vile, the worst of sinners,” (p.110). Dimmsdale is telling the church that he has sinned more than he should and that confession is his only way to let out what he has done and ask for forgiveness.
