The October Revolution of 1917, in which the Bolshevik party, led by Vladimir Lenin, brought about a coup, to overthrow the Provisional Government was a success. They presented the takeover as a revolution in the name of the workers' Soviets. Lenin had no faith in democratic elections and his primary objective was not to win mass support, but to create a party that was capable of seizing power. The Russian Civil War was fought from 1917 to 1922. It began immediately after the collapse of the Russian provisional government and the Bolshevik takeover of Petrograd, rapidly intensifying after Lenin's dissolution of the Russian Constituent Assembly.Lenin had motives for destroying the Constituent Assembly. The Reds were known as the Bolsheviks who faced their political enemies the Whites who were made up of monarchists, conservatives, liberals and socialists.
