The Scarlet Letter - Ultimate Punishment for a Secret Sin Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s epic tale of adultery and revenge, the Scarlet Letter, is the story of the destruction of a man’s soul and the strength and courage of an isolated woman in search of peace. Arthur Dimmesdale, a young conflicted minister, and Hester Prynne, a secluded single mother, both commit the horrid sin of adultery. As a consequence of her conviction as an adulterer, Hester is condemned to wearing a scarlet letter “A” to remind those of the Puritan society of her disobedience. Her counterpart, Dimmesdale, decides not to confess his sin, and is further destroyed by his self-inflicted torture. By the end of the book, Hester is no longer looked upon as the woman who committed such a disgraceful crime but as an intelligent and gifted young woman, while Dimmesdale suffers complete ruin due to his own inner guilt. Through the demise of Arthur Dimmesdale, Hawthorne suggests that an unacknowledged sin can ultimately destroy a person’s soul.
