Henry Ossawa Tanner Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Henry Ossawa Taylor was bron June 12, 1859 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the most distinguished African-American artist of the nineteenth century. He was also the first artist of his race to achieve international claim. Tanner's family moved frequently because his dad was a bishop and was often assigned different churches and schools. They settled in Philedelphia in 1864, where his early artistic interests were developed. Tanner decided to be an artist, at age 13, when he saw a painter at work during a walk in Fairmount Park near his home. Throughout his teenage years, Tanner painted and drew constantly. In his spare time he drew. He tried to look at art as much as possible in Philedelphia art galleries. He also briefly studied with a few of the city's minor painters. Eager to discourage his sons interest in art, Bishop Tanner introduced him to a friend to learn the milling business. The work in the flourmill was too strenuous and he became seriously HI.
