Buck; Mans Best Equal
Dog; mans best friend, is a legendary saying that has proved true throughout
history. From Lassie to Old Yeller, dogs have always been mans trusty, loving, loyal sidekick. In The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, the main character is a burly St. Bernard named Buck. In the novel, Buck struggles to find his relationship with man when he is forced to live in a world unknown to him. In this world, which is the wilderness, Buck must also discover who he really is; a rugged, muscular, instinctive beast. For a dog, Buck seems to understand and comprehend much more than a canine should. Which is why, in the novel, London uses Buck to represent a complex human being.
Judge Miller, Bucks original master, is a wealthy man who lives on a large estate (London 3). While living on the estate Buck enjoys a picturesque lifestyle, one that any dog would desire.
