This essay will investigate the stiletto and how it has been used to construct and signal class identity.
I have chosen the stiletto heel to investigate as it is seen as being exclusively female. The stiletto has been used throughout history to portray many images of women, which is interesting as women as a gender have struggled themselves with identity and status in society. I am also a fan of the 1950s glamorous, feminine style the era the stiletto came into the fashion world.
To discuss how stilettos have been used to construct and signal class identity I will first look at their design, how the design is unique from any other heel, their appeal and the controversy caused by the design. I will study the context in which the stiletto arrived, what was happening in society at the time- relating to World War Two, the current fashion in clothes in particular Diors New Look and the status of women. What did the stiletto bring to the era? What does the stiletto mean for women?
