The Underground Railroad Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Underground Railroad was the most dramatic protest against slavery throughout the United States. Its purpose was to give slaves a chance to escape and find freedom. The operations of escape started in the 1500s. It was later connected with organized abolitionist activity of the 1800s. It was not “underground” nor a “railroad,” but it was a network of escape routes through the woods and fields, river crossings, boats and ships, and trains and wagons that originated in the south, went into the north, and ended in Canada. The routes were not just in the north but also extended to the Western Territories, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The most intriguing feature of the Underground Railroad was its lack of formal organization. Its existence often relied on concerted efforts of cooperating individuals of various ethnic and religious groups who helped bondsmen escape from slavery.
