What Do Kidneys Do?
Kidneys are bean-shaped organs, about the size of a fist each. They are to be found in the middle of the back, beneath the Ribcage. The kidneys are sophisticated recycle centers in the body. Each day the kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to filter out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water. The waste and extra water become urine, which flows to the bladder through tubes called ureters. The bladder stores urine until we relieve ourselves.
The wastes in our system come from the breakdown of the material we eat which are used for energy production and self-repair. After our body has acquired the necessary compounds from the food, waste is sent to the blood. If the kidneys did not remove these wastes, they would become more concentrated in our system and may poison our body. The kidneys are also responsible for blood pressure stabilization.
