Light in August is one of William Faulkners most complex and difficult novels. Faulkner combines a variety of themes where numerous aspects of life and human nature are explored. Critics such as Cleanth Brooks have read Light in August entirely in terms of the individual and the community. This reading is a valid interpretation, as the novel deals with man, in relation to the community and his inability to connect with his fellow man. The plight of the pariah or the alienated individual separated from the community is undoubtedly a dominant theme in this novel. Cleanth Brooks reading brings to light that the outsiders violent and fearful attitude towards women.
