Moral decay in The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Great Gatsby is a story of the ill-fated love between a man and a woman set in 1922 America. There are several prominent themes running throughout the story including dreams and honesty. However, the most pervasive theme in The Great Gatsby is moral decay. In fiction, honesty is usually a reflection of a character’s morality, and all of the main characters in the novel are dishonest to varying degrees. It is possible to trace the moral decline of the characters from their attitudes towards truth and honesty. Also, the character’s dreams, and the methods they use in pursuing them, can reveal something about their underlying morality. The lack of morality that is displayed by the players in the story is illustrative of the disintegration of family values and the American Dream in the era of unrivaled prosperity and material overindulgence. Gatsby dreamed of a life with Daisy, but the route that he chose to take to achieve his dream was dishonest. The theme of moral decay is constant throughout the story, and it affects each character profoundly in a way that none of the secondary......
