The Colonial Pursuit of Happiness In the colonial era of American history, one man’s pursuit of happiness may differ from what might be considered a plausible pursuit in today’s society. Many believed the pursuit of happiness to be making God happy in any way possible and through Him, one could achieve ultimate success. Such persons included Anne Bradstreet and John Winthrop. However, others such as John Smith and writer, Pauline Maier believed that the pursuit of happiness pertained particularly to personal wealth. Though different in their techniques, the outcome for each and every man was to be utterly happy. Many colonial writers believed that true happiness rested in prominent faith in God. Happiness was not an everyday concept that anyone could achieve ordinarily. It had to be achieved in the afterlife. What awaited one in the afterlife was thought to be the key to true contentment.
