Secret Life of the Bees Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Section 1 The book opened with the main character Lily, talking about how the bees came and swarmed her every night before she went to bed. Sue Monk Kidd made it clear in the opening pages that this book was fictional. Through first person narration Kidd described a lonely girl. She was motherless, had few friends, and an abusive father. Fortunately I couldn’t relate to that character. I couldn’t relate to any of the characters we met in the first few chapters. There was Rosaleen, the African American house maid and there was T- Ray, Lily’s abusive father who certainly didn’t deserve the title “dad” and was henceforth called T-Ray. Sue Monk Kidd jumped right into biblical allusion. On page 2, Lily was describing how she was swarmed by bees at night. She stated “I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary.” The Virgin Mary is so widely mentioned in the first four chapters she could almost be considered another character.
