Genetic Disorders: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments A genetic disorder is a disease that is caused by an abnormality in an individuals DNA. Abnormalities can range from a small mutation in a single gene to the addition or subtraction of an entire chromosome or set of chromosomes. Chromosomes are compact spools of DNA. Chromosomes are considered as "DNA packages" that enable DNA to fit in the nucleus of each cell. Usually we have 46 of these packages in each cell, we received 23 from our mother and 23 from our father. Genetic disorders also can be passed onto family members who inherit the genetic abnormality. A small number of rare disorders are caused by a mistake in a single gene. A gene is the functional and physical unit of heredity passed from parent to child. Genes are pieces of DNA, and most genes contain the information for making a specific protein. But most disorders involving genetic factors, such as heart disease and most cancers, they come from a complex mix of multiple genetic changes and environmental influences.
