Like the gardens in China, the Japanese gardens were designed traditionally to make the natural landscapes of the mountains and rivers flow with the garden design. Japanese gardens were mainly intended to be viewed inside the house, rather than outside. In addition, Japanese gardens were set in a wetter climate, and would set sand and pebbles into water streams or ponds. The plants in Japanese gardens were to appear in the shape of mountains.
The gardens in Japan had begun to be designed in a peaceful way after the Samurais took over the government. The priest had designed the gardens to make it a place to easily meditate.
During the Heian Period, many of the principles dominated later garden designs that were established. The Heian gardens mainly followed the Chinese inspired principles including the idea that the pond should be created by a stream entering the garden area from the northeast and exiting at the southwest.
