Bertolt Brecht: "Mother Courage and her Children" Sophocles: "Antigone" In both plays – “Antigone” by Sophocles and “Mother Courage and her Children” by Bertolt Brecht – family members of each protagonist (Antigone and Mother Courage, respectively) die, although in “Antigone”, the deaths of Polynices and Eteocles occur before the play actually begins – however, Creon’s wife and son die during the play – while in “Mother Courage and her Children”, Eilif, Swiss Cheese and Kattrin all die one after the other during the play. The deaths are used to characterise the protagonists of both plays. In “Mother Courage”, they are also used to define Mother Courage’s children further. While Antigone is portrayed as a hero, because she fights and is willing to die for what she believes in, Mother Courage seems to have lost her will to fight, therefore is condemned by the reader as indifferent towards her children if money or the survival of her wagon is at risk.
