Conservation of Mass Lab
Question:
Does the weight of a substance change, after 2 chemicals undergo a chemical reaction?
Hypothesis:
If reactants go through a chemical reaction, than the mass should decrease in size. This is because when 2 substances are put together, heat, a gas or other things may be let out because of exothermic reactions. When the thing is let out, it loses weight. For proof, see added sheet.
Background:
I- A chemical reaction is between 2 reactants that react with each other to form 1 or more products. Also it is a change in the arrangement of Atoms and Molecules to make substances with different chemical compositions.
II- The law of the Conservation of Mass states that in a chemical reaction the total mss of the reactants is always equal to the total mass of the products. This means that whenever a chemical reaction takes place, the atoms are not changed, they are just re-arranged. Molecules are broken apart, and new molecules form.
