A sense of urgency in Romeo & Juliet Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In this essay, I will examine how Shakespeare emphasises a sense of urgency in his most famous play: Romeo & Juliet. I will use 4 passages as support for what I say: the Prologue, II.2, II.5 and IV.1; and also a scene from Baz Lurhmann’s film. The action of the play covers a period of five days: the opening street fight occurs on a Sunday morning and by early Thursday morning the lovers have died and the feuding families are united. From Capulet’s question “What day is it?” and Paris’s reply “Monday, my lord” (III.4.18-19), the day on which each scene occurs can be determined. What matters in the theatre is not the exact day, but the short time sequence. It is the pace and urgency in the play that makes the drama so compelling. The prologue opens the play with a brief summary of what’s to come on stage. This foreknowledge allows the audience an overview of the actions of Romeo and Juliet: we can see them struggling to attain happiness and know that they are doomed to fail: “star-crossed lovers”.
