To Build a Fire - Jack London - Man v. Nature Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In To Build a Fire, Jack London demonstrates his belief of the bitter relationship between man and nature. His use of tone works in a way that supports a theory of natures superiority to man and its cold heart toward mans plight. By analyzing key passages, one can ascertain Londons less than amicable attitude toward man and growing disrespect with his characters gradual and ever increasing ego and stupidity.
It did not lead him to meditate on his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon mans frailty in general, only to live in certain limits of heat and cold
(London p. 113)
Throughout the essay London makes a few comments that compare the man to his dog in order to demonstrate his belief that the dog (a symbol for nature) is inherently smarter than a man:
This man did not know cold. Possibly all the generations of his ancestry had been ignorant of cold, of real cold, of cold one hundred and seven degrees below freezing-point. But the dog knew; all its ancestry knew, and it had inherited the knowledge. And it knew that it was not good to walk abroad ......
