The Crucible's Main Themes Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the play, the Crucible, Arthur Miller deeply explores the Salem witch trials. He predominantly reflects the hysteria, injustice and hypocrisy that took place during this dark time in American history. Miller composes a play around these subjects in order to create juxtaposition between the Salem witch trials and the Red Scare. This parallel is reinforced with the descriptive portrayal of hysteria, injustice and hypocrisy that ensue within the story. Miller begins his play with the news of Abigail’s and other girl’s strange actions circulating the town. “Uncle, the rumor of witchcraft is all about,”(p.7). As soon as people hear that there have been bizarre occurrences, hysteria begins. Hysteria can be defined as an uncontrollable outburst of emotion or fear, often characterized by irrationality, laughter, or weeping. The author continues to use the subject of hysteria throughout the play. On pages 109 and 113, Abigail and the girls use extreme hysteria as a distraction; because they are afraid of being caught lying. “Abigail, with a weird, wild, chillin......
