The youth of today are involved in many sports and although this may seem like a great aspect to their lives, the competitiveness of sports can sometimes play a negative role. Frequent over-emphasis on winning in sports is very common in many of the sports activities played by the youth of today and may drive some young athletes to abuse their bodies nutritional and mental status. Some young athletes starve themselves to qualify for a particular weight category in a sport, or to make themselves more attractive for sports where physical appearance is important. Other athletes may over eat to bulk up. Many youth athletes are also left with very low self esteem due to the pressures of proper weight. Weight control in young athletes can get out of control, putting a youths mental and physical strength at risk.
