Perhaps one of the most controversial issues presented in the novella, The Wife Of Martin Guerre, would be the question of morality; and the ambiguity between what’s right and wrong. Bertrande, no doubt, is considered the heroine of the story, yet when the housekeeper, an influential and honest character, says to Bertrande “Madame, I would have you still be deceived. We were all happy then,” Bertrande does not heed her advice. Surely the happiness of the community far outweighs Bertrande’s personal desires? It seems that Bertrande is simply being selfish when she heeds her own morality over the wellbeing of others. On the other hand, it could also be argued that perhaps Bertrande’s perception of wellbeing differed from what most people in the middle-ages thought, as she herself, was evidently a rather avant-garde and individual character herself.
