Blanche is definitely the women in the play that displays the most femininity. In scene one the stage directions describe her as daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and ear-rings of pearl, white gloves and a hat. She appears totally overdressed and looks out of place in New Orleans.
Blanche is an aging Southern belle who lives in a state of perpetual panic about her fading beauty. She is very feminine and is always concerned with how she looks and does not liked to be looked at in harsh light. Her manner is dainty and frail, and she sports a wardrobe of showy but cheap evening clothes. Blanche depends on male sexual admiration for her sense of self-esteem. In Scene 2 and Scene 3 she is constantly fishing for compliments about her physical appearance first from Stanley and then Mitch. How do I look? she asks.
