Use of Costumes and Color in The Graduate Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mike Nichols 1967 Oscar winning film, The Graduate, is based on an original literary work by Charles Webb. The Graduate is a comical story carefully expressed on screen, in part, through Nichols use of color in props and costuming. Nichols chooses colors that evoke a psychological response in the viewer and uses these colors to portray character’s personalities and the emotions the characters are experiencing. In The Graduate costumes and colors depict the true essence of each character and situation through symbolism and psychological response of the viewer. Mrs. Robinson is, arguably, the most seductive and controlling character in the film. The first time Mrs. Robinson appears in the film she is wearing black; a color that conveys both her confidence and her power. When she convinces Benjamin to unzip her dress she takes it off to reveal black, lacy lingerie. When Mrs. Robinson meets Benjamin at the Taft hotel she is shown wearing a black and white animal print jacket. This jacket conveys Mrs. Robinson’s wild, uncontrollable actions, as well as her powerful side. The......
