Living in Sin? “Living in Sin? A Bishop Rethinks Human Sexuality” was written by John Shelby Spong, a retired Anglican bishop, and published by Harper San Francisco in 1988. This 250-page book is a critique of some of the Church’s stances on various sexual issues, and also offers opinions and thoughtful suggestions for life in our modern world. Spong’s offers two main premises. One is that sex is a healthy, normal, and beautiful part of any human life and should be thought of and treated as such. The other is that marriage, as it is understood today, is too artificial and outdated to be used as a moral compass by which sexuality is measured. He addresses adolescent sexuality, homosexuality, pre-marital sex and sex among divorced people, who he calls post-marrieds. It’s important to note that he does not condemn marriage, in fact celebrates it, but simply says it can’t be the only benchmark for defining “good” and “bad” sexuality.
