Minor Characters in The Crucible There are many ways in which Parris, Ann Putnam, and Elizabeth Proctor contribute to the plot complications and theme in The Crucible. Many people feel hostile towards Parris, which creates the atmosphere in the plot. Ann Putnam initiates the reasons for the girls dancing and being involved in witchcraft. Elizabeth Proctor adds complications, Abigail feels, by way of her marriage because Abigail thinks that if Elizabeth was not involved, she could be with John Proctor. All of these characters are important to the plot complications in many different ways. Parris reputation and character traits cause many to feel tension with him. He suffers from paranoia, which is evident in many instances. This paranoia makes him feel like he is being targeted by the other characters.
