Compare and contrast the different modes of narration deployed by any TWO films shown on the module.
The two films I will be comparing and contrasting will be The Big Sleep (Howard Hawks, US, 1946) and Memento (Christopher Nolan, US, 2000). I feel that these two films will prove a good basis for comparison of narrative as they follow two very different narrative structures for different points in cinema history.
The Big Sleep is a detective mystery in which a rich general hires a detective to look into his affairs as he is being blackmailed. With the detective as the main protagonist this story lends itself to the classical narrative, the story unfolding parallel to the discovery of clues and development of characters and events.
The Big Sleep is a prime example of Classical narrative cinema within its peak within the 30s and 40s, following the codes that Noel Burch calls the Institutional Mode of Representation (Bordwell, D and Thompson, K, 2004) or IMR.
