Working for a manufacturing company can be pretty demanding, deadlines and scheduling can be a ferocious part of every day, but these are not the only obstacles to negotiate. In fact, when it comes to obstacles in manufacturing, listening may prove to be the most important issue. If an order comes through for a product, the product must be made in strict accordance to what the buyer wants; this is often communicated perfectly, but means nothing if the communication is ignored. This is something I have experienced repeatedly with a particular plant manager who shall remain nameless for his own protection. While this happened on numerous occasions, he was not fired due to his unparalleled ability to make things right. There was a specific instance, however, when his poor listening cost the company more than a quarter of a million dollars, by no means a small loss for a manufacturing company.
