Lord of the Flies - Fear as an Excuse Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Fear is used as an excuse to act in normally unaccepted ways. In our country today, it can be said that the government established a fear in its people towards terrorist attacks. Weeks after 9/11 took place, the war on Iraq was considered reasonable by many people because of the fear the government had established for this purpose, but without this fear, many more people would have opposed it. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding the characters change from civilized and concentrated on getting rescued, and slowly, events take place that change them to savages. Since the boys on the island all had an inner desire for killing for entertainment, they use this fear to make savagery seem acceptable. Like in our government, the stranded childrens fear enables them to obliterate their prior intentions to continue their civilized lifestyle on the island and allows them to become blood-thirsty savages.
At the beginning of the novel, Ralph, one of the main characters, was the preferred leader even though the kids didnt know him, but they did realize he planned on continuing the civil......
