From the moment Christopher Columbus landed on the coast of modern day San Salvador in the West Indies, England realized it was time for it to begin exploration of its own before it fell farther and farther behind the growing powers of Spain and Portugal. The quest for expansion was first acted out by Sir Walter Raleigh after receiving a patent for colonization from close acquaintance Queen Elizabeth in 1584. Defining the area to be explored to latitudes 34o and 45o North (Cape Fear, North Carolina to Northern Maine), Raleigh fittingly gave the area the name Virginia in honor of the virgin queen. Taking three voyages, Raleigh used the first to explore the land and the second to establish settlement at Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina. However, on Raleighs third voyage, to his surprise, the colony vanished without a trace. This drastic failure could have been the end of Englands ambitions at global colonization if it had not been for the defeat of King Philip of Spains Spanish Armada in 1588.
