How Pi’s relationship with the setting he finds himself abandoned in, forces him to gain an insight into his own character and gain the strengths to enable him to survive? I will be writing about how Yann Martel explores narrative and setting to convey the central character attempts to improve himself both spiritually and mentally throughout his journey. I will be focusing on how Pi struggles with his journey but eventually triumphs at the end. “Life of Pi” is about a tragic sinking of a cargo ship, where there’s only one solo survivor from the wreckage, a sixteen year old boy called Pi. Also, on the lifeboat there was a hyena, a zebra (with a broken leg), a female orang-utan and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. Throughout this journey Pi needs to mature dramatically to enable him to survive. He has to overcome lots of different situations which push him to his limits. By the end of the novel we see Pi triumph over everything thrown at him during his ordeal out on the Pacific Ocean.
