When watching a film like Philadelphia, I cant help but be awed by the talent involved in this devastatingly excellent film. Director Jonathan Demme has assembled a cast to die for, with an intelligent, provocative, and thoughtful script, he has given us one of the best message films ever committed to celluloid. Whether or not you are heterosexual, homosexual, a gay rights activist or an out and out homophobe, you cant help but be impacted by the power of this movie. Of course, Tom Hanks shines in a brave role, a risky role that he elevates to heights of greatness. This sensitive, moody film touches on a vast array of subjects surrounding gay and straight men, family, and death, without ever being preachy, which is to its immense credit. An undoubted influence on societys growing acceptance of homosexuality. Philadelphia reminds us how far weve come in that direction and how far we still need to go.
